After soon to be 6 years at university studying dentistry I know how important it is to actually start your semester prepared and on top of things. To help you do that, I have decided to put together some tips on how to get organized before starting school, college, or uni. I also have a tiny surprise for you at the end of this post.
Save previous courses and make room for new ones
One of the main things you need to do is to save all your previous courses, lectures, and homework then completely delete them from your computer or just archive them to save some space.
The next thing that I also do, is to create folders on my computer for every class that I know I will have. Related to this, I also create folders on my GoodNotes app for any upcoming notes that I am going to take during the semester. (If you want to read more about what apps I use for digital note-taking you can check out this post).
Then I start to download my courses (if they are already posted) or try to find out what books I might need, then search for them on Scribd. At my university, the professors tell us at the beginning of the year about the books we need to buy so my folders stay mostly empty until the new semester start.
Clean your room
The next thing you wanna do is do declutter everything school-related in your room. This includes old notes that you took on paper, books, pens, markers, and notepads. This way, you are not only left with a clean space but you also get to see what you need to buy or don’t when it comes to stationary. I mean, we all know the struggle to not buy any unnecessary notepads or journals at the beginning of school, college, or university.
Print your timetable and put your classes into your calendar
This one is pretty self-explanatory but it’s a must. After I am sure of my schedule, I put every class in my phone calendar. This way, I know exactly which days I am busy so I can plan other activities between my classes.
Manage your finances
I started doing this only 2 years ago but what I do is: I put on paper everything I need to buy for university along with their prices. As a dental student, we are required to buy certain materials and we are, most of the time, given a list at the start of the semester. This way, I make sure that I don’t buy unnecessary things and that I don’t overspend.
Other things
Another thing I like to do, which might sound silly, is that I make sure my printer has enough ink, that I have enough papers for upcoming things that I need to print, and so on. This way, I will not get stressed out knowing that I have to go get ink or other things.

Great post! I always have to clean my room at the start of the semester and do little bits of cleaning throughout because during the semester, I never seem to have time for a deep clean
Haha, I like to clean before because whenever I have to study I tend to get into a cleaning mood so I have to make sure everything is clean ahead of time😅
Very important information here. There are so many things you need to do before you start your new school year, and organising yourself and your budget is certainly one of the most important.
I had the learn the hard way – tidy space, tidy mind! It’s very hard to focus when your room is an absolute mess. Printer ink is also a definite essential… the printer always seems to choose an opportune moment to run out.
