Your life outside of work is just as important as your work life. The time you spend working should be balanced out by spending time with friends and family, doing your hobbies and taking a holiday or a short break to refresh. If you are spending too much time at work, then you are unable to spend quality with friends and family which is what life is about. An important quote here is “work to live. Don’t live to work”. I have created a list of what I believe are the best work-life balance tips to live by.

Reasons why maintaining work-life balance is so important:
To stay physically healthy
Sitting at a desk all day working is not good for your physical health. The body thrives off the movement, so you need a little time to get out of the office and experience fresh air. Spending too much of your life at work can lead to physical issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure. To refuel
You will only be able to increase your productivity if you just take a break for work. Leaving work for a little bit will help you to achieve more in the long run as you will be able to reset your mind before getting back to work. “Studies reveal that those who maintain a steady work-life balance are much more productive than those who do not.”
A lot of the time you will need a break from work so that you can refuel.
To take different opportunities
If all you do is work all day, then you are not experiencing much in life. By doing things outside of work you are giving yourself the change to take up different opportunities and become a more rounded person. For example, you can improve your sports skills, or go and volunteer to give back to your community. There are so many extracurricular activities outside of work so you will never be stuck for ideas.
To keep up your mental health
I believe that businesses and employers don not put a big enough emphasis on mental health. Over-working can lead to dangerous health issues like stress overload and depression. If you’re buried underneath a pile of work, then the most likely cause is that you will just burnout. A stressful job will cause you to be unhappy which will just lead to deeper issues. This is why it is so important you can let yourself take work breaks and go and enjoy the other things in your life. Working long hours can have a negative impact on your health and your relationships so make sure you are working an appropriate amount of time.
My best work-life balance tips:
Have set work hours
If you have set work hours, then you should not be touching work in your time off. This gives you a chance to switch off from all that hard work and you can now have some time to yourself. Even if you are so exhausted for a heavy day at work, take your time to watch a movie. This is one of my top work-life balance tips as it allows you to give time to yourself.

Look after yourself
Be good to your body, eat lots of fruit and veg, go for walks, or take on a bit of yoga. Make sure you get enough sleep each day so that you can be your best self the following day. I have written a post on the little habits you can make for a healthier lifestyle that might be of use to you!
Make your workspace for only work
If you work from home, then the best thing you can do is create a workspace for yourself and that is the only place where you should be doing or thinking about your work. It’s slightly harder to split your work and life when working from home which is why having a separate space can help.
Concentrate on one thing at a time
By this I mean when you are at work try and concentrate on only your work. Then when you come home only think about your home life. This way you will not be filling your head with work problems when you are meant to be having a break.
Set priorities
Set little priorities that you want to do whilst at home. Think about fun things you can do like play some football at the park or have a picnic with your family. This way you can have something to look forward to at the end of a workday. It means you will not be consumed by your work if you have other things to be getting on with.

Leave work at work
This way you can think clearer when everything is separate. You will not have to bring any of the struggles home from work. Track your time so that you can cut out activities you do not enjoy when at home so you can make the most of your work-free time. With the type of technology, we have now it is so easy to continue your work from home. This means there is no cut off unless you make one. Work through the guilt of not thinking about work.
Take advantage of your options
This is an important work-life balance tip if you have the opportunity to do this. If your work offers flexible hours, job sharing, working from home, or have unlimited days off (with conditions) then take advantage of this. This gives you the control over your hours. So, take some of the responsibility to manage your own time in a way that suits you.
Ask for help
Businesses and employers are looking for more ways to improve their systems nowadays. They want to be as successful as possible and to achieve this, they need to satisfy their employees. They must respect that people have a life outside of work and that they will be more productive when they come to work with a fresh mind. If you are struggling with your workload then the best thing to do is to let your employer know. It is in their best interest that you can work effectively. If you have too much on your plate, they may be able to lessen it for you.
