There are many adults who fear a visit to the dentist, with the majority of those who are anxious having had one, or several unpleasant experiences, at the dentist when they were young.
It must be said that many years ago, the dental clinic was indeed an unpleasant place, with bare waiting rooms and the amplified sounds of patients in obvious pain, doing nothing to put young children at ease. When such a child grows up, they do not forget the painful experience, and this can have serious consequences if the person deliberately avoids essential dental treatment. Here are some strategies to help a person overcome their deep-seated fear of the dentist.

- ARRANGE A NON-TREATMENT VISIT – If the person who has a fear of dentistry is allowed to visit the clinic without actually having any treatment, this will go a long way towards relieving the stress. By visiting a dentist in Sydney CBD or in your local area, you will not be arriving for treatment at an unknown destination, and by talking to the dentist, you will soon realize that pain medication is freely available, should it be necessary.
- DISCUSSING THE TOPIC – If you can discuss fear of the dentist in a calm and logical way, the affected person often realizes that they are worrying over nothing, and once a person knows this fear stems from a childhood incident, it is much easier to remain calm. An adult can apply logic to an emotional reaction, and talking about your fears can really help, and close friends or family can bring up the subject shortly before a dental appointment, which could ease the person’s anxiety. The dentist will often bring up the subject with an anxious patient, in the hope of easing their worries, and dentist have had training in this field.

- NITROUS OXIDE – Also known as “laughing gas”, inhaling a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide from a mask generally makes the patient feel light-headed and less anxious. The effects wear off quickly and it is quite a pleasant experience that will certainly make the dental appointment a lot less stressful. - ORAL SEDATION – Temazepam, or Valium, as it is also known, is another drug that will relax a person, and this might be all that is needed to calm a patient adequately to allow the treatment to be carried out.
