Everybody knows that looking after your teeth and gums is important. If you don’t, you’ll get cavities and you could even lose your teeth entirely. But that’s not the only reason that you need to pay attention to your oral health. Not many people realize that it can actually affect your overall health and cause you some serious problems if your teeth and gums aren’t healthy. So, if you’ve been putting off that trip to the dentist or you don’t think that you need to bother changing your toothbrush regularly, it’s worth considering these potential complications and health issues that could be caused by poor oral health.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
If somebody asked you what the causes of heart disease were, you’d probably list things like poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol, and you’d be right. They are all common causes of heart problems and things that you should always be very cautious of, but did you realize that bad oral health could potentially damage your heart as well? If there is a buildup of bacteria around the teeth and gums, that bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel toward the heart. Once there, it will cause a buildup of plaque in the arteries and clog them, in much the same way that excess fat does. So, poor oral health can actually increase your chances of a heart attack or a stroke by a long way.

MENTAL HEALTH
Self confidence is an important part of good mental health and people that have very low self esteem will often struggle in social situations and their mental health can suffer as a result of that. Your smile is very important because it’s the first thing that people notice about you and it makes them feel at ease around them. But if you never smile because you feel self conscious about the way that your teeth look, it can make it more difficult to make a good first impression on people and eventually form good relationships. If you are particularly worried about crooked or stained teeth, you should see a leading glebe dentist and look into some cosmetic procedures to fix the problem. You’d be surprised how much difference it can make to your self esteem and your overall mental health.

RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS
If you have bacteria in the mouth, you’re constantly breathing it into your lungs all of the time, and that can cause you some serious complications. Studies show that people with bacterial infections in the mouth are more likely to develop infections like pneumonia. That doesn’t mean that you’re guaranteed to get pneumonia just because you have poor oral health, but you are putting yourself at risk.

So many people skip trips to the dentist or don’t bother flossing because they don’t think that it’s a big deal, but it isn’t just cavities that you need to watch out for. Poor oral health can lead to so many different health complications so it’s important that you stay on top on it.
