In a world where working from home has become the new normal, silence can overwhelm us sometimes when we’re all alone. An easy solution to relax and feel less alone is to put on some music. Although everyone’s music taste is different and some of these might not be your cup of tea, I’ve listed some genres of the best music to work to and suggested some artists below to make your workday a little easier.
CLASSICAL MUSIC
Probably the most work-proof genre of music is classical music. The soothing tones of a piano or violin will help you calm down and relax, as well as regain your focus. This new background sound will not only break the silence of your work environment but will also help you regain your focus. One of the most beautiful piano songs in the world of classical music is River Flows In You by Yiruma. You’ll very likely recognize this song as soon as you put it on. It’s the perfect song to put on in the background because it has some calm parts, but also has some more vibrant parts, bringing variety into your day.

TOP OF THE CHARTS
Putting on a chart playlist is like listening to the radio, with the huge advantage that you can skip songs if you really don’t like them. Why is the top of the charts some of the best music to work to? Because it not only helps you to stay up to date with the latest trends, but it’s also the perfect mixture between calm and hyped. The calm music will help you concentrate on the work you’re doing, whereas the hyped music will give you that dance break you need from time to time. It will provide you with the energy you’ll need to get through the rest of your day. Of course, with this one you have the risk that if you know a lot of the song, you might be singing along a little too much to get all of your work done.

RANDOM ARTISTS
You’re probably wondering why putting on a random artist’s music is the best music to work to. Well, besides very likely not knowing all of their songs and therefore not being able to sing along, you might also find some new music you enjoy. You’ll also be supporting a good cause, as a lot of smaller bands and artists are struggling and by listening to their music you’re helping them advance their career. Don’t know where to start looking? I made a list of some small artists to check out a while ago, which would be your ideal place to start!

BENEFITS OF LISTENING TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK
As I mentioned before, every person is different, so even though I enjoy listening to music whilst I’m working, you might not. However, there are quite a few benefits to listening to music while you work.
For starters, you will feel less alone. Although the artist isn’t there in the room with you, the sound of their voice will trick your brain slightly into thinking there’s someone else in the room. The music breaks the silence and you’ll immediately feel more at ease being in your own company.
On top of that, listening to music will also help avoid your brain wandering off. When I work in pure silence, I often catch myself thinking about other stuff than the work I’ve been doing. With music in the background, the sound and lyrics of the song will make their way into your brain and make sure there is no room for thoughts other than the ones that come with your work and the song.
There are a lot of benefits to listening to music while you work and when you put on the best music to work to, you’ll also see your productivity increasing. Do you already listen to music when you work?
